Harvest report 2024

Harvest report 2024

Unlike in recent years, the 2024 vintage was a wet year, especially so during the period of harvest. One considerable benefit was that the abundant spring rainfall helped to restore water reserves underground, something that had not happened for many years.

The rainy spring was followed by a fairly hot and sunny summer, but by the second week of September the temperature dropped considerably and the rain returned in abundance, lasting through the final weeks until harvest and even beyond.

The rainy conditions meant that we had to change the approach to working in the vineyards, especially compared to the relatively dry last 5 or 6 years when scarcity of water was often the main concern. This year we had to take particular care with the foliage, removing leaves to allow good airflow through the bunches to encourage the best conditions for the perfect maturation of the grapes in our vineyards.

We are a small azienda not dependant on outside workers, with just 7 of us working 7 hectares in total. This meant that we could be flexible during the harvest, choosing to pick when when the weather was calm and avoiding the storms and the very heavy rain which we had not seen the likes of since the harvest of 1994.

Though it is early days, I am pleased with the results from tasting in the cellar. The wines are already showing a fine elegance, fruity and with a sensation of freshness and vibrant energy. This will be a vintage of moderate structure and alcohol content, with wines that will have vivid freshness and great drinkability.
