Harvest Report 2022

Harvest Report 2022
2022 was a year characterised above all both by its dryness and by average temperatures that were considerably higher than normal. There was very little snow in winter (snow is essential to allow water to slowly percolate deep into the subsoil), followed by very little rain in the spring. The hot summer weather had already arrived by the middle of May. This caused real worries since our vineyards, positioned on hill slopes, suffer considerably when there is a lack of water. And yet, the vines demonstrated a surprising ability to adapt to the conditions, helped by careful tending of the foliage as well as the summer growth on the ground. Through such hand-care in the vineyard during the long and hot summer, the grapes were able to escape damage and reach a full state of maturation. It was important for us not to harvest the Nebbiolo too early, as was the temptation, for even by the end of August they seemed almost ready for picking. However, we patiently waited until the end of September and the beginning of October when a period of a few days of rain helped the grapes to swell and to reach their optimum state of maturation.

The wines of 2022 demonstrate equilibrium and balance accompanied by a freshness and finesse, a beautiful surprise given that it had been such a dry and hot year. The tannins in the Nebbiolo wines are notable, yet very smooth and silky. We are expecting the wines to evolve well and that we will be able to consider the 2022 vintage to be an excellent one, though only time will tell as they continue to evolve in both barrel and bottle.
